The machine is a VR 1000 that has had the VR-1200 signal system installed. It also has the color playback units installed.

The one thing that Ampex did over the years was to keep the transport plate the same through out the years. If you look at the VR-1000 to the AVR-2, the holes are all in the same places. There is even the same hole in the AVR 2 tha twas used by the VR 2000 for the power cable to the head preamp.

Subject: [QuadList] Help identifying an unknown Ampex Quad machine

Hi group:

I was touring a TV station today in Kentucky and noticed they had some Quad tapes in their collection. I asked if they still had their Quad machine and I was told yes.

We’ll not one to let a good opportunity pass by, I asked if I could see it. I was told it was on the 3rd floor. We’ll I figured storage…turns out the 3rd floor is all the air handling equipment for the whole station.

I want to help prevent older tape equipment from ending up in the dumpster, so I told the person I was with that if they even think of discarding this machine, call me first. The station manager wants to see if it is possible to get this up and running again. Might be an interesting challenge.

Got to say, it is a neat looking machine. I was hoping it was an AVR-1, 2 or 3…but it wasn’t. No idea if the station has extra parts or not.

Here are two pictures…any idea what machine this is? The name plate on the front says Ampex Corporation, but there was no identifying numbers. The machine is in a very dark area (sorry for the low quality of the pictures…I took them w/ my cell phone with almost no ambient light). It appears to me as if there are tubes in the upper left of the bridge…but the rest of the bridge is empty. The tray w/ the cards seems to be complete, but I could not see the back of the machine.

Thanks;
