[QuadList] ID--ACR-25 carousel encoder disc

Wayne,

I was in Van Couver a couple years ago to pick up cruise ship to Alaska and stayed in a hotel near the CBC building, and it kept reminding me of one of the early years "Blooper" where the guy announced: "This is The Canadian Broadcoasting Castration".

I looked at my disk and it has the same number as on the box. I hate to handle it, one time when we had to replace one, a group of us had the carrousel out on a table and the poor guy who was removing it got a little nervous because the boss was there barking orders to him, and flipped it up in the air and it came crashing down on the carrousel and broke. Apparently it stuck a bit to the carrousel and popped off.

The 4024 may be the "Job Number", mine is Job 4139. There is also a "405" engraved into the hub of the disk, I don't know what it means.

Keep it in a safe place, it is a rare relic.

73,

George Keller

We could have used the gold medal as we are still way behind you guys in the count.
This one is in a box with the Dynamics Research Corporation label. I worked at a TV station (CITV) in Edmonton that had an ACR so perhaps that is where I got it. The box says 03 but etched on the disk is 02 so it might have been a replacement for some reason.
Two other #’s are on the box label. #246 and #4024. I do recall the ACR serial # was 1605. Now why that # jumped back to me after so long I do not know. My wife tells me men cannot remember what happened 30 seconds ago and I say yes; that is why we men invented the instant replay.

Hi Wayne,

I would have awarded you a gold medal if you wrote Part Number 1370713-030 which is the number on the box. Good try. How did you come by it?? Was it a spare or out of a machine? You make me feel bad about that HS100 disk made into a clock. I have an old Western Union clock which Western Union never came to pick up from the transmitter in the Empire State Bldg. I put a quartz movement in it and it has been in the ham shack for years.

The disk was made by "Dynamics Research Corp." Wilmington, Mass. on Sep 6, 84. Job # 4139, I don't remember the cost, but I think I remember it being about the price of a luxury car at that time.

DE,

George Keller

May I please also win a hot dog if I tell you it is Ampex part # 1370713-03??

I have one and a cassette; those are the only items saved from my ACR-25 days.

I also have a HS-100 disc I turned into a clock but that may start another thread.

Hi, George,

If you scan it at a really high resolution, you can have a very large print made and have that framed. Less risk to the encoder disc, more of it to enjoy. Maybe we can get MOMA in Manhattan to hang it somewhere.

The MWA Nova telecine equipment I sell uses similar encoders on various moving parts.

Cool item, and thanks for posting it.

YOU HAVE WON A FREE HOT DOG AT THE "TEXAS WEINER" HERE IN PORT JERVIS, NY, (IF THEY EVER SHOVEL IT OUT). YOU MUST BE HERE TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE BY 4:00PM EST TODAY. (BY THE WAY, EVEN THE TRAINS AREN'T RUNNING).

There were many correct answers, but Harold's was the earliest.

It is the carrousel encoder disc from the ACR-25. It is about the only "Relec" saved from the dumpster of the 6 ACR's at CBS. It is such a work or art, I couldn't let it go, it was a spare. It is still in it's original wooden box. There were about 3 or 4 of them replaced over the years. I just scanned it and it came out OK. I would like to frame it, but can't find a reliable framer around here that I would trust to do the job.
