[QuadList] Changes in Post over the years (wasElectronic Editing Notes)

One of the 1" type transfers I did a few years ago was very high band. From a S/N standpoint, it was cleaner than some of the early type C recordings. The record date gave me the impression that is was a 7900 series recording, not a VPR-1. 


When I did the close credit package on a VPR-1 in Palm Springs (Professional Women's Golf Remote) in 1976 or 77 (?), I was amazed at the quality that I was getting. Here was a machine that nobody wanted to touch in the truck (out of Seattle), but I managed to edit together a closing montage of shots with the on-board editor "on-the-fly". Having had many hours of experience with 7800 at NTSU, I thought the VPR-1's introduction was a joke and that it could never work. When the closing credits rolled over my montage live to the national network, I thought differently about the VPR-1.

The VPR-7900 which followed the 7800 by just a few years added a flying erase head, moved the dropout into the vertical interval, had an H-locked drum servo, and added Very High Band carrier mode which was identical to quad and then later to type-C format.  All of that allowed very high quality video and edits.  So while the 7800 had its limitations, it was a stepping stone in the development of helical during an era when many thought it could not be done.  Thanks to Bill and all who worked on those projects!
 
I still have a couple of 7900's.  Park has seen one of them and I think he would agree that the quality is quite good.  The transport design with the moving guides was the weak link, and that was addressed by the VPR-1.
