[QuadList] The Beatles, Washington D.C. 1964

I know that the Marconis from the Ed Sullivan theater were sent to the
CBS O&O in St. Louis, KMOX, and they promptly donated them to the
educational station (PBS didn't exist yet) where I saw them in 68.

After reviewing a set of images found in a google search, it appears
that the '64 Sullivan NYC studio shows were using Marconi Mark IV's if
the caption dates are correct. Therefore, I am apparently wrong in
stating that the Marconi's did not arrive till later. I do recall that
the '65 show was sharp as tack when compared to the Feb. '64 shows, and
perhaps from that observation I made the incorrect assumption that the
Marconi's were on that show only.

Yes, it would be nice to hear from someone who was there on site at that
time to set the record straight.

Marconi's did not get used till the later part of '64. The Beatles '65
show (the last B&W Sullivan) was on the Marconi's. The PC 60's came on
the scene in the fall of '65, and they were soft (no image enhancer
yet). I'd be curious to know if CBS ever had Marconi's in a remote
truck. Perhaps not. I think CBS saw the Norelco color cameras coming by
'64 and were saving money for the color upgrades in '65, but Sullivan
was such a hot show that they got s studio installation of Marconi's.
That's my guess.

Speaking of The Beatles and Sullivan, go out and acquire the latest
Beatles on Sullivan DVD:

The Miami show has an improved transfer and image processing that we did
for Sofa Entertainment (and shown at SAA in August and AMIA earlier this
month).

My guess is TK-30. CBS and Sullivan did use the Marconi's so it may be
that camera.

I bet Chuck could tell just by looking at the picture.

what do you it was shot with??

don't see the "corners" of the image orthicon in any of the
shots, nor any changes in sensitivity near the edges of the picture.
Which leads me to conclude that the video was probably cropped.

I've used I/Os with over 600 lines of resolution. These
pictures are softer than that.

That said, how nice to see the video!

No issues with the video quality, considering what a massive
upgrade this is from the kinescope copies that have been in circulation
in the collector's circuit since the 80s. The kines were missing most
of "Twist & Shout" and "Long Tall Sally" entirely.

Indeed David! I enjoed it! thanks for the details!... It
is great just to have this! Thanks!

		Ed,

I don't know who's truck it was. I have an email into
Ron to find out if he knows. Also, I would presume that the VTR was in
the truck, and not microwaved back to some record VTR in a station (as
in WRC doing the pickup and feeding it back to their station). The video
is not that sharp if I recall correctly, meaning it did not look like
the higher quality TK 60's or Marconi's. But, if you are in any way a
Beatles fan and can toleratse the audio problems, then you should be OK
with the video quality as well, in my opinion.
