Here's some lighter stuff:

A number of folks on the list are familiar with Paul Beck or at least his name. He's on the staff at Boston's Emerson College Television, Radio and Film department.

He's also one of the principals involved in the Museum of Broadcast Technology in Woonsocket, RI.

Here's a little tour of the museum's Quad VTR collection, as led by Paul and posted in May, 2011:

And in case you can't get enough Quad and are looking for some content originated on Quad, check out this 1960 Steve Allen Plymouth Show.

The original aired on NBC at 10 p.m. on January 11, 1960. Enjoy the early VFX use of Chroma Key playback and a wipe at 1:31:44:05 on the window burn.

There are other segments of the same show that you can click on.

And since we're kinda talking re-runs here... Herrres' Johnny and the music of Stan Zabka of Grass Valley, CA

This Quad tape was carefully transferred by David Crosthwait at DC Video in Burbank.

This segment of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson came from NBC New York and aired on Sept. 1, 1964, according to David.

Johnny explains Zabka's connection to the the Carson show, and plays a cut from his then-recent album of TV themes. Listen to hear something familiar to NBC listeners and engineers.

I saw this projected by a Sony (4K?) onto a theater screen at the AMIA Conference in Savannah, GA in November of 2008.

David explained that the tape was—if I'm recalling correctly—an RF or second generation baseband dub. (Heterodyne?? David?) He noted that the quality and color wouldn't be as high as if the transfer had been from an first-generation recording.

What amazed me was the sound quality! Very simple miking and very clean recording.

Perhaps the most important part of the tape's background is its age. Investigation turned up that this tape was the oldest surviving color Tonight Show videotape... er, Television Tape recordings in existence.

Others had been erased and re-recorded on or dumped, depending on what story you hear about what happened to NBC's videotape or television tape archives. It also has an interesting series of white blocks that appear in the upper right hand portion of the picture at 6:16 in. Five times. A Cuing method?

Stan has a military background... and he tied that and Christmas together into what's become "The Soldier's Christmas Song." Armed Forces Network tells the story:

Here's Fisher's full commentary and Zabka from Wiesbaden, Germany:

Here's Kate Smith's take on the song, performed (via black and white kinescope) on the ABC "Bing Crosby Hollywood Palace Christmas Special" that aired on Christmas Eve, 1966 (in Color... as you'll see with other Crosby-hosted Hollywood Palaces that appear on YouTube)

More of Zabka's music... and variations including the NBC chimes musical signature can be heard here:

Enjoy!
