[QuadList] Mark X on Ebay

Some additional Mark Ten trivia.............

In addition to the variations that Chris describes, there were different tip widths too! All of the possible combinations of bearing type, preamp, and tip width as well as new or rebuilt, were indicated by unique dash numbers, so there were a lot of them and some were 3 digits! The base number is 1800705 and that was generally all that was on the name plate. The dash number appeared on the case label along with the serial number. If the head in question is a rebuilt 10 mil, air bearing, nuvistor, then it is a -049. When new it would have been -04.

Dash numbers up through -199 were all 5 and 10 mil heads. Dash numbers starting at -200 were 15 mil heads. In 1983, prices for new ball bearing heads were $3,750 while air bearing versions were $5,050, all regardless of preamp type.

The Mark X was a family of heads. There were air and ball bearing versions. The head was used on three different types of machines. The VR-2000 was the first, then the VR-1200 and VR-1100 also used it. The pre-amp module was different for each series of machines. The 2000 got the Nuvistor pre-amp. The VR-1200 got the transistor pre-amp and the VR-1100 had a non pre-amp that used a trim module. So it was the same head, just a different module.

I used a version of the Mk X on a VR1100 with ball bearings instead of air - was this a separate mark no. we also used Mk III and IV on this machine as well - hard to remember circa 1975-76.
