BBC News had a report on this - last night. Apparently a cameraman on the show had developed a type of fish-eye lens which was used in the David Bowie clip. He kept the tape as demonstration of the the new lens. He is supposed to have 100 Quad tapes which he kept as demonstrations of the lens and some of these may be "lost" also.

Attention David Bowie fans!

A recently rediscovered David Bowie Top of the Pops performance has been shown on television for the first time since it was originally broadcast in 1973. What appears to be a 2" quad reel is shown during the interview segment.

It was believed that every recording of the singer performing Jean Genie had been destroyed.
