Hi Quad Guys,

Thought you might be interested on a recent transfer I did for the famous Alvy Ray Smith.

You may have heard of LucasFilm, Pixar, Ampex, Apple, Xerox PARC, and many more.

He had an experimental project on Quad called "Sunstone" made in 1979 that needed to be transferred. The tape had as lot of big hits but I edited around the big ones.

That brings the question about the difference between "transfer" and "restoration". When I was at The Post Group, one project I worked on was the restoration of many Stephen Cannell's TV shows. The tape was viewed and notes made of any deficiencies. The tape was then digitized and all the problems painted out. The output was again looked at frame by frame to make sure the artist got all the hits. Sometimes it went back into the Flame to do more restoration.

So I made a transfer, as requested by the client. After getting the DVD, Alvy noticed some minor dropouts and hits. He said his wife didn't see anything but he noticed them. So I made a "restoration version" by editing out the big errors and doing other corrections to the images. Since it is only a three minute piece it didn't take too long.

The result?

"I received the new DVDs today and just looked at them. Sunstone lives again!
Excellent job. "

Nice to be complimented by a Master.

Alvy said they used six IVC 9000s to do the edit, under computer control. This in the late 70s! And he said the six-sided cube took 56 hours to render!

Best,
Park
