Also, any tape head on any machine (audio or video or data) that sees bias frequency, AC erase current or an RF carrier will self-degauss the instant you hit "record".

Agree with others RE: need to demagnetize the path and keep it shiny clean. I was told by senior maintenance folks (a very long time ago) that the magnetized flakes of oxide shed from some tapes would stick to the guides, etc and put magnetic scratches on precious tapes.
