Hi all,
I remember the "Sound-in-sync" - many of the BBC progs we received had this,
we didn't use it to my knowledge at ABC OZ

Two methods I remember were the DATE system which encoded QPSK audio into
the video and worked well on quad. This was implemented by PBS to send four
channels of audio. Of course, outboard encoders and decoders were needed.

The other was called 'Sound in Sync' and put a burst of digital data on the
horizontal sync tip. Some machines didn't like it too well and a variation
was used where the data was put on the 'front porch' of the horizontal sync
interval. These were developed by the telephone company to get audio along
with the video for no lip sync error, but subcarrier transmission beat them
out for cost and simplicity.
