Bob has it pinned down. The H Reference Sync is usually timed to House
reference so that the proc amp can be set to external on playback. During
Record, the E-E video is delayed by all the electronics of the machine. It
is now late and the clamp in the waveform monitor is working on a section
of video rather than blanking. The delay of the Record Playback electronics
plus the Amtec, and Colortec adds up. Does anyone know the exact amount?

switch off external reference while recording certain video, such as network
feeds, etc. It's not hum, it's a clamp timing problem . . .
