Hi Dave:

I couldn't agree more.  A paper manual just can't be beat when you're digging into a large and/or complex schematic.  However, in the abscence of such a manual, the electronic version beats nothing at all, and so I would support the ***proper*** scanning of manuals.  Again, you are correct, a poorly scanned one is a major pain if it is even usable at all.

Regarding the printing of large schematics, the latest version of the Adobe reader gives the option of tiling the output.  By selecting that option, and then adjusting the scaling either up or down, you can get tiled output that can be either smaller, larger, or the same size as the original.  You just have to assemble the sheets, but the quality is quite good.
