Hi Joav,

I don't know exactly why PAL-M was adopted, but you can find more details about this history below.

"In 1972, with the regulation of PAL-M system in Brazil, was officially the first broadcast in color in Brazil, from Caxias do Sul, RS, during the Grape Festival, on February 19th."
You can find this text and more details about Brazilian Television history at:
http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hist%C3%B3ria_da_televis%C3%A3o_no_Brasil     (translated by Google<https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=pt&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=pt-BR&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fpt.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FTelevis%25C3%25A3o_no_Brasil&edit-text=>)

The B&W TV system used until that time was 525 lines, 30fps (60Hz) (system M), the power grid was also changing from 50Hz to 60Hz.
A Brazilian committee was formed to choose the new system of color TV at the time were analyzed all color TV standards, NTSC, PAL and Secam. TV broadcasters and equipment manufacturers were visited around the world, sought a system of colored TV that was compatible with black and white TV already in use by Brazilian viewers. I knew and worked with one person engaged in this committee, Mr. Claudio Luis D'Avila - former Technical Director of RBS TV Network.

Best regards,

Great read.
My friend, Carlos de Andrade, is deeply involved with restoration in Brazil. PAL-M is an interesting format. I wonder why Brazil had to adopt their own format and didn't go with just NTSC or PAL (aka Pao-M)
Good luck

Hi everyone,

Here at Sao Paulo Brazil, has a public broadcast television station
called TV Cultura, they are running a amazing job of restoration. With two
RCA TR70 fully operational plus a rewind unit, they are digitizing from
Quad 2", 1", Betacam and U-Matic tapes
(mainly Pal-M) to Quicktime mov archives and then to LTO backup tapes, at
total around 130,000 hours of programs, it is an epic job for generations
to come. They "un-retired" some old engineers in order to teach new ones
and does this job. Unfortunately these
old videos are available only by order, not free at web.
