Before contemplating shipping any VTR, one has to take into account the unknowns and "worse case" scenarios in transit. Most of my machines that I have acquired I've prepared, loaded, secured and transported myself. Experience tells me what to expect from a vibration standpoint. On a good day, content disruption is minimal. If a third party is involved i.e. a shipping company, they are just doing their job without regard to value unless it's something like Fed Ex Custom Critical. So any possible (within reason) preparation is necessary before handing it over to a shipper.
Here is an example of a good shipment without crating. 2,200 lbs. of machine:
If I was shipping anything this big and delicate to a show where time is limited to fix issues at the show end, I would triple backup everything. The shipment would go out at least a month ahead of time so as to inspect content on the destination end and plan a contingency of repairs if the machine looked stressed or outright damaged.
