Electronic movers know what to do...
the though of even using common carrier
makes me cringe......
My company shipped huge delicate mainframes all over... we never
crated anything... and we would NEVER consider common carrier as a answer to
transport for high value electronics goods.
Also I have heard no mention of insurance... Electronic padded
freight is easy to insure... common carrier as easy for hi val
stuff...
and remember if a semi trailer goes off the bridge
the crate does not help.
and I never get an answer as to how many of these are left...

FWIW:
I have found that crating, especially older heavier tube gear, can end up
subjecting it to more big shocks
that the crate doesn't necessarily insulate it from. In fact it makes it
worse!
Forklift guys tend to see it as a big heavy cube they can slam around all
they want.
Its crated/protected, right? In one event, a heavy crate was dropped
about a foot,
hitting one corner first, thus skewing and practically ruining the entire
contents.
How you crate something like that is an artform unto itself!
When SIGGRAPH paid to ship one of the Scanimate computers to the Orlando
Convention Center, I called
United Data Movers. They specialize in big expensive delicate equipment.
I had separated the individual racks, and it was made easier by the fact
that each rack had 4 casters.
They did a great job of wrapping and carefully moving them there and back
for a surprisingly low fee.
As a testament to their care, and the fact that the system was built like
a brick outhouse, I arrived,
re-plugged all the cables, powered it up, and it worked the first time!
They don't make 'em like that anymore!
Best of luck! It would be great to see a VR-1000 humming along!

As I noted earlier:
All of this equipment should be crated in order to protect the gear, and
to allow for easier handling during shipment and when it arrives at the
convention center in Las Vegas. There's a cost to create the crates and get
the equipment in them. But it makes safely moving stuff like this possible on
a routine basis.
There's a significant difference in how much Per hundred weight – 100
pounds – it costs to move equipment that's crated and can be moved with a
forklift compared to equipment that is simply "blanket wrapped" or is "lose."
>From the material handling form:
Show site shipment under 5000 pounds:
Crated or skidded: $56.75 / hundredweight
Uncreated or pad wrapped $80.25 / hundredweight
Estimated weight of transport/overbridge and two racks, crated at apx.
3500 pounds, total.

I shipped my machines blanket-wrapped, but strapped into the sides of
the truck. Nothing was damaged in transit, not even a little bit.
