Congratulations on getting the machine up and running,

Auto tracking in an AVR 2 puts a little oscillation in the tracking so
that it can find the peak of RF. It is a very slow and small amount. I never
found it to really work that great. There really is not that much of a
need for it unless the operator does not know how to turn the tracking knob.
So you will probably find that manual tracking is the easier mode to use.

Suggestion for the banding is to check the DG controls. This will reduce
the residual banding to almost zero if the tape is close to being recorded
correctly.

The way we found to do it is to put the scope in 2 V and then use the
chroma or DG mode. If you note on an EE signal there is a line that is where
the yellow and blue bars chroma matches. The DG controls are set in
playback to get a single line here. It does wonders and will give several more
generations quality.

Set the chroma level to the same as peak white in the 2 V mode and recheck
DG if you had to do a big adjustment.
