Yes, the IVC has it's advantages especially in color reproduction. We've done a lot of 1" type A and 1" IVC over the last few years and IVC jobs are always more rewarding. Here's an image from an IVC tape:

We regularly do type A transfers. We have VR-7800, VPR-7900 and VPR-1's in their original A format.

There never is a lack of surprises with the A format and pre-A format recordings. 

One A format issue is the deterioration of the tape stock. Other problem issues usually point to the lack of basic good engineering standards when the recording was made i.e. the operator did not know what he/she was doing.

According to Jim Wheeler, the first use of the AST was the 7800 or 7900 machine although it may have been a prototype only.
